Our beloved Leif died this morning at 11:05 in Moncalvo, Monferrato. He was in critical care since last night. Leif died of a cardiovascular collapse. He had been sick since the second week of June from an infection. Leif was burried today at his home in Ponzano Monferrato. We made a beautiful grave for Leif. He is not alone and near his family.
Leif was the most beautiful and intelligent dog I ever had in my life and he gave me 11 years of unending, deep love. Leif's spirit lives on.

Wiener Schnitzel

Saturday started with, me, simply dog's mother, making homemade southern-style buttermilk biscuits for breakfast. After breakfast I made a quick run to the local food shops to buy items for preparing the Wiener schnitzel. In Moncalvo there is an excellent butcher: Madama La Piemonteisa (The Lady of Piedmont); this butcher shop has the best quality meat for making the Wiener schnitzel or any other meat dish I wish to prepare. I don't like to buy meat at the supermarket, but only at the local butcher shops where the quality is of a much higher standard. I remember the days when I grew up in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and how my mother and I would go shop for the meat and sausage at the local German amd Polish butcher shops. I grew up in a rich multicultural envionment as a girl and, I was already at a young age exposed to eating foods from different cultures: Austrian, German, Italian, Greek etc (this was in the 60's and 70's). All this old experience from my Sheboygan days has followed me through my life and to this very day I am insistent on eating the best food I can, and that means buying from local producers and butchers and cooking at home the old-fashioned way (no processed foods please). My dog Leif watches me every time I cook, unfortunately he cannot eat the way I do because the food is not suited to canines.

After grocery shopping, when I arrived back at the house, I was greeted by a dog whose nose and mouth were covered with flour. Leif had rumaged through the garbage bag and pulled out the empty flour bag. I was teasing him saying: "Were you wanting to make buttermilk biscuits?" Leif had such a cute embarrassing expression on his face.
That afternoon I started to prepare the Wiener schnitzel. Wiener schnitzel with cooked potatoes sprinkled with fresh parsely is one of my favorite Austrian meals. And, of course a good tasting Austrian beer has to accompany it.

Leif was eyeing me intently the entire time I was preparing the schnitzel, so as not to miss anything important (that something edible might drop on the floor accidently). Not far from me, Leif would lay on the floor in his typical way, with his front paws crossed and having such a sophisticated aura about him.

The Wiener schnitzel tasted delicious and I am very proud of making them; I have made them many times and it just gets better as time goes on. Leif tasted a few pieces of schnitzel and, of course, was not satisfied and wanted more. Yes, I make an excellent schnitzel. The desert was delicious too: Apfellaibchen with Italian panne icecream. I learned to make laibchen while living in Austria. Wow, what a mix of culinary cultures--the Austrian with the Italian. This of course is 'human being' food and not recommended for canines.

Update on Leif's Surgery

Leif's surgical wound is healing beautifully. As one can see in the photo the incision is barely visible. His fur is growing back. Leif is full of energy and has even managed to go for a run around the neighborhood a few times, over the snow laden hills and fields, leaving me to chase him all over the place. Of course no one can catch him, he just comes strolling home when he is finished with his romp.

Every day is a new adventure for Leif.

Simply Dog's Surgery: recovering from skin cancer

My Simply Dog had an operation last week. Leif Hund, his real name, is surviving a bout with skin cancer. Luckily the carcinoma was caught early, as it was only in stage II. It was a cancer in his dermis and had not reached the bone. An abnormal swelling was noted on his shoulder about a month earlier and then suddenly on Saturday 20, December a piece of thick skin fell off opening a large bleeding wound. Immediately the veterinarian was called and Leif was taken to the clinic; upon just gross observation the veterinarian suspected a dermal malignancy. Biopsies were taken from the wound at various depths. It certainly put a damper on the Christmas time and the coming New Year, but we were all thinking positive, as Leif's veterinarian was confident the cancer could be arrested.

Leif was strong and healthy basically and even travelled to Austria in the Christmas period. During the drive to Vienna, along the way, when we were in the Steiermark, Leif had the chance to play in the snow. Leif loves to tunnel in the deep snow, but he had to be a little bit more conservative not to get too frisky in the white stuff as it might irritate his wound. There is a photo of Leif playing in the snow in Austria. Leif is so happy when he plays in the snow and I love to see him happy.

The results from the biospy would not be available until after Christmas. Anxiously we awaited them. The results when they arrived were positive for maligancy, but only in the skin and not further into the bone.

The surgery was scheduled for a Wednesday, but had to be rescheduled for the following day due to a sudden snow storm which blew into the Piedmont region, here in north Italy, blocking our driveway and the roads to the clinic. That Tuesday night and into the wee early morning hours of Wednesday I was shoveling snow. In some moments I was out there at 2:00 and 5:00 in the morning, clad in slippers, pajamas and robe, shoveling snow. I did everything I could to make sure we could drive the car to the veterinary clinic. Chains had to be put on the tires and snow continusouly removed as it was snowing nonstop. But despite the snow shoveling, we had to wait until Thursday to drive to the clinic due to the icey and snow blocked streets. We live in the Monferrato wine producing region of the Piedmont in northwestern Italy, an area of sweet rolling hills with many narrow roads winding through the countryside which become treacherous when covered with snow and ice. It was just Simply Dog's luck that on the one day when he needed to have the most important surgery of his life, a snow storm had to blow in..

The surgery was a success. In the photo one can see the large incision that had to be made to remove the cancer. Leif's Veterinarian, Paolo Conti in Moncalvo is excellent. The assistant veterinarian was an anaesthesia specialist. So, Leif was really in excellent hands for his operation. Leif's veterinarian travels to the United States 4-5 times per year for Veterinary continuing education and in my opinion he is one the best small animal veterinarians in Italy. We are so thankful for the excellent veterinarians who saved Leif, the beloved Simply Dog.

Leif was brought home immediately after the surgery. The most difficult time for him. He was not allowed to go up stairs and had to stay quiet. He was on pain medication and the first night at home he had to be given a pain medication injection. Leif was whining at times and trying to walk around as if he did not know what to do with himself. He was allowed to walk gently outside to go and do his pee pee routine. The first night I could see he was very uncomfortable. The first 24 hours were the worst for him. Someone was sitting at his side all night, keeping an eye on him and letting Leif know he was not alone in his hours of discomfort. The next morning things became easier for him. Leif started to smile a bit in that unique Simply Dog way and is definitely on his way towards a successful recovery and a beautiful life in 2009.

In the photo you will see Leif in his pajamas. I was teasing Leif, telling him he needed a New York Yankees baseball cap to complete the outfit. Leif has to wear a T-shirt over his body to cover the surgical wound.

The sutures were removed on Monday the 19 January 2009. The veterinarians were quite pleased with his recovery. An update on Leif's recovery will follow, so please visit and read his Simply Dog webpage soon.

Dog Friends in Monza Park

Today "Simply Dog" (Leif) and I went for a walk in Monza Park. This is my dog's favorite park.
The park is huge and one of the largest and most beautiful north of Milan city. In this park you will see just about every dog breed in the book. Today Leif was visited by a very pretty female German Short-Haired Pointer. He fell in love with her instantly. And, of course we do not know her name, as her owner was not accompanying her. The two dogs played and played. Lovely. The female was quite agile and fast; she would run around Leif, jump inot the air, swirl, and then gallop, or rather, fly off into the distance. Then to return again to tease Leif. Her tail was quite cute; it was white at the end. Her owner was calling and calling her with a whistle, but she acted like she heard nothing. She did not seem to care and continued flirting with Leif. The two new friend just continued playing. Finally she ran off into the distance again and never returned, her owner still blowing the whistle. I could not understand why her owner did not personally come to get the dog. Leif was quite sad when she left. However, he met numerous other dogs in the park today and it resulted in a very good day of canine socializing !

The sun is very warm today and a light wind is blowing.....but the wind will pick up as the big strom arrives in a few hours....gotta go

Leif and Sandy

Leif and Sandy. Here they are today saying hello to each other. These are dog friends. A friendship that is cherished between two dogs. Wonderful. It is so interesting to watch them as they greet each other and communicate in a language unfamiliar to me. All I know is that they are always so happy to see each other. Taking my dog for his walks each day is what brings much joy to my daily routine. We both need our daily exercise. Today we walked in the countryside. The weather was unusual today as we are awaiting a very strong wind storm from northern Europe. The media was showing a very harsh strong storm with hurricane force winds slamming into Wales, England, France, Holland and Germany. Today this storm is expected to move west. Here in north Italy, north of Milan where we live, they have predicted 80 -120 km/hours winds. Now, in this moment as I write it is very warm, like 20 degrees C. and a little windy and very very sunny. But it will change. The wind is already getting a little bit stronger. I am hoping it will only be the northwest part of Italy that will feel it. This fierce storm should, if it even comes our way, arrive late afternoon or early evening.

We will keep watching the weather. And, in the meantime Simply Dog and I will enjoy the sunny weather while it lasts.....and hopefully we will get a nice walk or two in before the big storm hits.

Leif is just SIMPLY DOG, and here he is wearing his new Trover ™ drench coat.
This weekend he finally was able to parade, prance and jump around in his smart ‘designer’ coat from Trover ™ http://www.trovercoats.com/ The beautiful countryside in the background is the Brianza, which is located north of Milan city going towards the direction of Lecco. The Alps are in the background, somewhere beyond. Since it was raining some days we had to wait a bit to do his fashion shoot just right. Object of Desire: The White Truffle from Alba

The white truffle might smell like earth, tree roots and old cheese, but this gastronomical object of desire, from Italy’s Piedmont region, is very famous for its aroma, taste and aphrodisiac qualities. For centuries people have travelled from near and far just to savor a little piece. It is a gastronomical jewel only to be experienced at its fullest intensity in Alba, Italy.

In the Piemontese dialect they are called trifola d’Alba (the white truffle of Alba), and known by its scientific name as Tuber Magnatum Pico. From September until December the white truffle is harvested from its earthy home in the hills of the Langhe south of Alba and from the Monferrato. The white truffle is a hypogean fungus, living entirely underground, ensconced among the roots trees, and those among the oaks are the most sought after by the trifulau (truffle hunter) and their dog. The keen noses that hunt for the white truffle are those of various breeds of hunting dogs that are specially trained to search among the trees. And, it is always a mystery as to which tree might produce the best, as individual trees vary considerably. Other tree species such as the hazelnut, lime, poplar, willow also present possibilities for savory truffles to grow. The size, flavor and aroma of a truffle is contingent on various factors such as moisture, weather, species and age of the tree, soil type and acidity, proximity to the roots and tree trunk, and insect traffic. Nature has a way of making certain that the truffle ultimately created is a gift of surprise.

One has to travel to Alba itself, a town rich in Roman and Medieval history, to experience the mystique and festivities surrounding the harvest of the white truffle.
Alba, in Cuneo province, was founded by the Romans in 89 B.C. and originally named Alba Pompeia and even came to be the birthplace of a Roman Emperor named Pertinax. Although the Romans founded the city of Alba, they however were not the ones who discovered the white truffle of Alba. Rather, it was first discovered by a Polish count named De Borch, but then later in 1788 it was first given its official scientific name by a Turin physician and naturalist named Vittorio Pico, hence the name: Tuber Magnatum Pico. In present day Alba some Roman artifacts still remain, although most of the architecture visable is clearly Medieval, hints of the Renaissance are obvious. Noteworthy is the Cathedral of Alba, with its impressive Renaissance archwork, standing in the midst of Alba’s historical center with its majestic presence overlooking the festivities of the famous Alba truffle fair on the streets below.

The 76th National White Truffle Fair of Alba runs from the 30th September to 5th of November, 2006. In 1929 the first Truffle Fair in Alba took place and concurrently the economic value of this earthy gastronomical treasure was recognized, due to the effort of Giacomo Morra who also initiated the white truffle’s export potential.

October is the height of the white truffle season, because it is the time of the highest prices and competition among both the finders and buyers. It is also the time of a special gala event for truffle lovers. On 12 November 2006, the 8th International Auction of the Alba White Truffle will take place at the Castle of Grinzane Cavour, and will get media coverage. In previous years, astronomical prices have been paid for prized truffles, as much as Euros 95,000 in 2005, and the money was donated to charity.

Old local traditions still surround the white truffle, one of which is to give a prized truffle to a famous person. This tradition was started by Giacomo Morra back in the 1950’s. Recipients have been former U.S. presidents, movie stars and political figures and others. Names on the list include: Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy and Reagan, and also Winston Churchill, Michel Gorbachev and celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Alfred Hitchcock, Rita Hayworth, Sophia Loren, Luciano Pavarotti, Gerard Depardieu, and Alain Delon. The 2006 truffle recipient is still a secret.

It is best to come to Alba, or other towns in the Langhe and Monferrato, if you want to taste a truffle in its moment of full flavor and aromatic intensity. The best way to eat truffle is within three days of it being dug up. So, that means going to one of the local restaurants which offer white truffle on its menu of local specialties. Or, you can buy one and rush it home to enjoy. It is important to know the quality of the truffle and where it came from, and price is determined by the weight. White truffles are priced differently than the famous black truffle and other black truffle species. One thing that is important to remember when eating truffle, is that it is always best to eat it with simple foods like scrambled eggs, omelettes, pasta, rice, or meat dishes like Brasato, with truffle thinly, delicately sliced over it; a special truffle cutting knife is used for fine slicing. A typical local salad, is a mixture of the local specialties of truffle and asparagus, along with celery, lettuce, lemon juice, salt and pepper and mascarpone cream. Tartufi is also added to cheese, especially the mountain cheeses of Piedmont, for instance in Toma cheese, as well as in salami. Other local favorites to try are pork or chicken with truffle, or cooked cornmeal (polenta). The typical wines that one drinks with truffled foods are Barbera, Dolcetto, and Nebiolo, all native to the Langhe and Monferrato.

Some local restaurants in Alba who feature truffle on their menus are the Ristorante Dulcis Vitis, located on via Rattazzi 7. Another restaurent is Daniel’s Al Pesco Fiorito located at Corso Canale 28. Outside of Alba there are many great places to eat and in variety of price ranges. If you have a car and can drive around this is even better. To recommend are La Crota on Via Fontana 7 in Roddi (CN). Another fine place to eat is La Rosa Dei Vini at Località Parafada 4 in the town of Serralunga D’Alba (CN). If you want to dine in the Castle of Monticello D’Alba, then visit the Ristorante Conti Roero on Piazza S. Ponzio. The best thing to do is just travel around and visit the Langhe, as it is filled with great restaurants.

Shopping for truffles can be exciting and also a mystery. There are numerous stands were truffles are also sold, along with assorted funghi, salami and cheeses from the region. One will immediately note that not only the white truffle is being sold here. Various species of truffles exist each having its own defining characteristics in terms of size, color and fragrance. The famous, treasured black truffel (Tuber Melanosporum Vittadini) from France, the “truffe du Périgord”, is also found in the area, as well as other species such as the summer black truffle (Tuber Aestivum Vittadini) and other black colored species such as the winter black truffle (Tuber Brumale Vittadini). Having that said, a variety of pseudo-black colored truffles are found in Italy, for instance in the Marche, Tuscany and Umbria. However, the Alba white truffle, is the object of desire here in Italy.

The Alba Truffle Festival lures thousands of people to it festivities. It was amazing to see the large crowds of people strolling through the streets and watching with interest the various Medieval games displayed, while sipping wine and nibbling on local food specialties. An environment of “Food galore”—that is the only way to describe the scene in the streets and piazzas. The smell of barbecues, chocolate and cheese filled the air. Many types of foods were waiting to be tasted like hazelnuts from local growers, and roasted pork (Porchetta) served with cornmeal porridge (polenta) was so delicious. The salamis made with Barolo wine or black truffles were delicious. Then one also had to taste the farinata, a pizza made from corn meal, and one of my Piedmont favorites.

Delicious sweets were abundant at the festival and I sample several. The first was a rich almond and chocolate cake, served with chocolate sauce poured over it. The cake was accompanied by a glass of Moscato d’Alba wine from the Langhe region. The Langhe is famous for the wine produced from the Barbera, Dolcetto and Nebiolo grapes. This wine is a dessert treat in itself. The wine had a more fruity taste to it than the Moscato D’Asti. It was delicious with the cake. And, I was lucky to have a chance to taste it, as this wine will be difficult to find again due to the locals consuming most of it. Then I tasted some other Piemontese specialties such as apricot cake made from local producers, Gianduja chocolate, and, finally, Il Torrone Piemontese, a sweet confection made from hazelnuts, honey, sugar, egg whites, and cream. Much more is offered and one has to try all of them before going home!

When in Alba, one must also pay a visit to the famous shop of Tartufi Morra—the grandfather of 20th Century white truffle commerce. The Tartufi Morra shop is located at Piazza E. Pertinace no.3, in the very center of Alba. It has a prominent presence in the town. The store is in the historic Casa Torre building dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries. The front door was very appropriately decorated with large photographs of the typical Piedmontese trifulau and their truffle hunting dogs. Upon entering the store one will immediately be overcome by a strange, fragrant smell. The store was filled with all sorts of food products containing bits of truffle: pasta, rice and condiments and more. Good books to read about truffles are available for purchase. One excellent book to read is Carlo Cracco’s White Truffle Utopia, published in 2002 by Editoriale Fernando Folini, in Casalnoceto, Alba province; the book is available in both Italian and English languages. Since there is so much to learn about truffles, it is to one’s advantage to just continue exploring the festivities all over the town. The atmosphere was warm, friendly and inviting, with many opportunities to learn about the local culture while sampling local food specialties and wines. The local people, the merchants, who participate in the festival, are very proud to display their products and to answer questions about the local traditions and history.

A colorful exhibition of Alba’s truffle festival history, which includes all the original festival posters—most designed by prominent Italian artists—since the1920’s, is located in the Palazzo Mostre e Congressi at Piazza Medford 3 in Alba. A large collection of photographs depicting the festival’s history was also presented. And, both children and curious adults could take part in designing a truffle festival poster, which then gets projected up onto the large screen for all to see. One cannot help but get into the artistic mood after walking through the beautiful historical poster exhibit. The poster exhibit displays the different styles used by the various artists in bygone years to express how they perceived the local celebration of the indigenous white truffle species so deeply rooted in Piedmont’s cultural history.

And, the local communities throughout the Langhe and Monferrato do keep their cultural history and practices alive by presenting to the public each year numerous events. Since the truffle harvesting season runs from September until December, that means one can travel throughout the season to enjoy the festivities and gastronomy. The Alba truffle market is open until 8:00 p.m. on the weekends. And, there are also smaller truffle fairs in the Langhe and Monferrato areas. One thing to note is that the Langhe region is only in Cuneo province. Whereas, the Monferrato area is located in both Asti and Alessandria provinces. There is the 8th Annual Truffle Fair in the town of Montiglio Monferrato (Asti province), which runs from the 1st –8th of October. Bergamasco (Alessandria province) also had a truffle fair on 8 October, with another coming up on the third weekend in November. Another festival to visit is Ovada’s (Alessandria province) truffle market running from October through December. Finally, there is the 52nd Moncalvo Monferrato Truffle Fair (Asti province) from 22-29 October 2006. All of these claim to offer white truffles, and this may be so, but one must always be cautious as to the quality when buying, and it is not like you can taste a sample of the truffle before buying either.

For travelling to Alba, Italy drive as follows. From Milan take the A- 4, then take the A-26 to Alessandria. Then take the A-21 to Asti. Take exit (uscita) Asti Est. Then drive towards Alba on the SS-231 that runs between Asti and Alba. Another way to drive from Milan to Alba, is to take the A-7 from Milan to Genova, and then take the A-21 to Torino. Then exit at Asti Est. Then drive toward Alba on the SS231. Enroute one will see the long green hills of the Langhe topped with villages, old castles and ruins. As one nears Alba there will be plenty of signs with directions to the town. People in the area are very friendly, so if you are lost, don’t worry just ask: “dove e la fiera del tartufo?”

Simply Dog and Truffles

Simply Dog goes to Alba, Italy to see the white truffle the gastronomical jewel of Italy.
We visited the 76th Fair of the White Truffle (Tartufo Bianco) of Alba.
He took a long tour through the streets of Alba and observed all the events.
He smelled wonderful food and fresh air. But, he did not get too close to the truffles though, as they are heavily guarded. Then he even got his picture on a poster design for the Truffle Festival. He dreams of being a truffle hunter some day.....

Truffles.....Tartufi as we say in Italian

the land and culture of the white truffle, Tartufo bianco, in the
province of Piemonte, in northern Italy. We will be visiting the
"Fiera del Tartufo Bianco" in Alba.

Simply Dog is in Rome

Simply Dog goes to Rome. Roam, Rome and roam. Simply Dog loves to roam all over Rome.

We had to chauffer Leif around Rome, because he wanted to have a tour of this beautiful, culturally unique city.

I think that even from a dog's point of view, Rome might be something different, than, let's say, Milan. Rome certainly has wider sidewalks, so if you are the kind of person who likes to take long walks with your canine friend on a wide sidewalk, then Rome is your place to walk. I noted that in many northern Italian cities sidewalks are narrow; this can be frustrating when trying to walk alongside a person or a dog. Rome is definitely a lovely place to take long walks.

However, this was the first time my dog Leif visited Rome, and we wanted him to see all the sights and to sniff all the interesting smells of this ancient culural landscape. Leif went everywhere from the Colosseum to the Circolo Massimo, and from Trastevere and Tasteccio to a fabulous four-star hotel in the Aurelius area.

What an adventure for a dog. What does a dog think about Rome? What would a dog think about the history of the Colosseum? ...Those are all interesting questions, and ones that are of course not easy to answer!

Treats and appetites

There are of course many things a dog could like to eat. My dog Leif has his own idea of what he prefers. I often wonder why he has such exotic tastes. But the big secret is that his most favorite treats are bananas, green apples, and the Purina B-Steaks.

I never had a dog before who loved to eat bananas and green apples. Every time I sit down to peel a fresh banana or cut an apple for myself to eat, Leif is walking into the kitchen. he takes his place sitting directly in front of me starring straight at the fruit in my hand. With each bite I take, he longs for a taste of it. So, green apples and bananas are fruits we share to eat.

However, Leif and I do not necessarily share the same tastes in everything we eat. He gets really crazy for the Purina B-Steak treats. You should just see him when I come from the grocery store, he is already expecting that I bought him a package of these B-Steaks. This treat, I think, is typically dog. The green apples and bananas not.

The aroma that rises out of the bag when I cut it open really makes him salivate. The bag looks very trendy and makes Leif think this is something very special.
